Choose your own adventure

Vestvember is chugging along a little quicker than my actual vest progress is, but I still think I’ll finish in time.

But I am running up against the undeniable knitter’s intuition that tells me the bottom edge is going to roll like a crazy rolling thing even after blocking. Here’s the rub. You knit the hem treatment sideways, then pick up stitches and knit the body of the vest up vertically from the side of the hem band. So it’s not as easy as just adding a knit facing–to do so one would need to pick up stitches on the bottom edge, as well, and knit the hem facing down. Of course, this is what I’d prefer to do since the knit facing will stretch more than a ribbon facing. But I also know that I am unusual in my embracing of the finishing.

And so, gentle knitter, I wonder what you think?

And while I’m asking you your opinion on that, let me also ask you this:

Would you be interested in an email list consisting solely of post notifications when I blog something that qualifies as an announcement? Design releases, class dates, appearances, and the like?

And this:

I’m going to be in New York City on January 21st – 23rd for Vogue Knitting Live. I’m arriving on Thursday, in time enough to give a Fit to Flatter class before the weekend festivities start if a venue happened to open up. Would anyone be interested in a NYC class on January 20th? If so, do you have a yarn store you’d recommend I contact about a class?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Option 5 – a deep hem facing made from a bias strip of Liberty of London woodsy print, lightly interfaced so that you have, like Paul Smith’s suits, a ‘little bit of nice’ inside. Failing that, Option 1-3, but never 4 – polls are always nice and thank you for asking!

  2. Would an applied I-cord work on this?

  3. I would love an announcement e-mail. I follow blogs via RSS feeds but sometimes get way behind. It would be nice to have an alert when there is something I shouldn’t miss.

  4. I’d love to have an announcement e-mail list. I want to be the first sign-up when you do a class in the DC area!

  5. I’m happy with my RSS feed … and Susan’s Option 5 😉

  6. I like your blog for announcements, etc, but an email list could be good too. I think an NYC F2F class would be great! I loved the series. Maybe Knitty City could host a class? Brooklyn General also has a good sized space.

  7. I’d definitely like to be put on an announcement list, and I’d be beyond thrilled if you decided to do a class in Madison, WI!

  8. 1) I love the ribbon facing idea
    2) I typically sign up for email lists, so I’m sure I would if you created one, but I don’t think it’s necessary because your blog is in my google reader and I see everything as you post anyway.
    3) I’m nowhere near NYC, but if you come to Seattle – I’m full of ideas!

  9. you forgot option E:

Are you kidding? While I understand each word in the post, you’ve assembled them in sentences to hopelessly advance for my little brain to understand.

    Sorry, I don’t know.

  10. I think an announcement email would be great. As for locations in the city I would have to go with Knitty City which is on the Upper West Side or La Casita which is in Brooklyn with a bar, but a bit on the small side.

  11. I’m truly not qualified to comment on the facing issue…sorry! Like the announcemnet idea. I can’t wait to see you finished vest. Already love the color.

  12. YES to the newsletter. If you want ideas about how to do it, I also have those (I have a newsletter of my own).

  13. I wonder if you could knit a facing that could be sewn in? It might be easier or simply less fiddly than picking up the stitches around the hem, but would still provide plenty of stretch (unlike the ribbon facing).

In the final pattern, I wonder if the construction could be altered so that the vertical front (which isn’t already picked up around the base) could actually be picked up from the knitted facing? Wow, that probably doesn’t make any sense… basically knit a double-wide hem treatment (plain for facing/WS, patterned for RS), but instead of ending and beginning at the vertical front panel, just BO the patterned RS half of the sts and continue the plain facing/WS half. When starting the main body of the vest, you would first pick up sts from the “half”/facing band (bridge?), then later (looks like ~2” up?) pick up the rest of the sts from the patterned hem treatment.

    Maybe that’s too fiddly! 🙂

  14. Pearl Chin at Knitty City would probably be very open to your hosting a class – great location (half a block from the 1-train) and yummy yarns.

I’d probably go with the knit facing, personally, but love the idea of the ribbon.
