New Pattern: Petrea

Summertime always seems so long, in the knitting world. So few patterns! So much sun! Well, here’s a little something to liven up these warm months (and help with that excessive air-conditioning).

I’m so pleased to release Petrea (rav link) after our wonderful photo shoot at TNNA.

Gauge: 20 sts & 24 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch, blocked. Recommended needle size of US 7/4.5mm.

Pattern Notes:

Petrea is a sweet, scoop-neck cardigan with traveling vine lace panels. The flutter elbow sleeves draw attention to a narrow waist, further highlighted with the triangular lace insert on the back of the sweater. It is knit in pieces from the bottom up and seamed. The garter stitch button band and neckline are added after seaming.

(All images in this page copyright splityarn. She’s awesome.)

Petrea offers a balanced visual impression that flatters both curves and the bustline; worn with a close fit, it makes the perfect throw-on for that summer dress or tank. The balance of the scoop neckline and lace panels make Petrea a natural choice for proportional shapes, but with extremely minor alterations it will flatter other shapes as well: simply shorten or lengthen the cardigan or its sleeves to suit your personal preference.

Vertical darts allow for extremely flexible shaping, customized to fit your body. Should you desire less waist shaping than specified, you can omit or decrease the shaping rows entirely on the front of the tank. Bustier women can accommodate their needs by performing more increases on the front of the sweater, and not in the back. These extra stitches can be decreased into the twisted cable panels.

As with all sweaters, carefully examine the pattern schematic to note potential modifications before you knit.

Mad Color Fiber Arts “Sweet” lives up to its name. The alpaca and silk blended with the merino give this yarn a great drape and the colors are perfectly blended to rich, saturated hues. The drape of the yarn opens up the lace panels perfectly and give just the right amount of swing to the fluttery sleeves.

If you would like to use an alternate yarn, please make sure that it has a medium-weight, drapey fabric at the specified gauge.

Many thanks go out to Elizabeth Sullivan for tech editing, and Caro Benna Sheridan for taking the amazing photographs.

Petrea may be purchased here or from my ravelry pattern store for US$6.00. I hope you like the sweater!
