Fairwind

$12.50

The Fairwind Pullover is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit pattern generator. Upon purchase, you’ll receive a credit for a custom version of Fairwind on your CustomFit patterns page and instructions on how to create it.

The Fairwind pullover is my 2019 retreat design for our wonderful friend Kim Kaslow of The Woolen Rabbit. Kim is a thoroughly New England girl like myself, in love with our mountains and beaches and lakes – however chilly they might be. Our climate calls for sweaters just about any time of year, and here in the northeast we love a relaxed vibe that likes to dress up (just a little) every now and again.

You can make your own Fairwind in any combination of sleeve and sweater length and silhouette you like thanks to CustomFit’s magic. Your custom pattern will also be written to your specific gauge and size preferences.

This pullover has sophisticated detailing, from the understated cable texture to a generous ballet neck to optional side slits created by simply avoiding seams on the bottom 6” (12.5 cm) or so of your sweater.

Like most CustomFit patterns, Fairwind is available in several sihouette, fit, and sleeve length combinations. Whatever choices you make, Fairwind makes a great backdrop for some stunning yarn. I’ve shown it here in Woolen Rabbit Piper, a lusciously-soft alpaca-merino-silk blend. I love this base, which combines just the right amount of softness, stitch definition, and stability.

Sizing

Fairwind is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here in an a-line silhouette, on Maya in a women’s average fit.

Fairwind is also available in straight, and tapered silhouettes, and fits for men, women, and children.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Fairwind pattern will be written to your exact gauge, whatever it may be. Any weight yarn will work well with this design, and you should swatch in The Periodic Cable stitch.

(But if you’re curious, I liked my Piper fabric around 6 stitches and 8 rows to the inch.)

Materials

I worked Fairwind in The Woolen Rabbit Piper DK, in the color “Tupelo Honey”. In the Periodic Cable stitch pattern, I liked a gauge of 24.25 sts & 32.75 rows = 4’’ (10 cm); I used a size US 5 / 3.75 mm needles. At that gauge, you’ll need around (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10, 11, 11) hanks for a tunic-length a-line garment in approximate sizes 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm cm.

(Straight-sided and/or shorter sweaters will use less yarn!)

If you’re *not* using Piper, or you’re getting a different gauge, I strongly recommend the app Stashbot by Hannah Fettig for yardage estimations.

Construction

Fairwind is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves.
