Bricklayer Pullover

$12.50

The Bricklayer Pullover is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit pattern generator. Upon purchase, you’ll receive a credit for a custom version of Bricklayer on your CustomFit patterns page and instructions on how to create it.

The Bricklayer Pullover is a blast from the past for me, design-wise: it’s heavily inspired by one of the samples from my second book, Knit Wear Love. Knit Wear Love was a kind-of precursor for CustomFit: “Meta patterns” in simple shapes that are endlessly extensible from a design perspective. Cardigans, pullovers, tanks, vests, cowls, boleros, tunics, and wrap sweaters are each written in 12 sizes, three gauges, with different “customization” patterns that mix and match.

The Bricklayer offers a classic take on a simple crew-neck pullover. The sleeves and front are adorned with a simple texture pattern that looks like bricks and works beautifully with shaded-solid yarns like the Swans Island shown. You can make your own Bricklayer in any combination of sleeve and sweater length and silhouette you like thanks to CustomFit’s magic. Your custom pattern will also be written to your specific gauge and size preferences.

Like most CustomFit patterns, Bricklayer is available in several construction, sihouette, fit, and sleeve length combinations. Whatever choices you make, this sweater makes a great backdrop for some stunning yarn. I’ve shown it here in Swans Island Worsted, a beautifully-shaded and super-soft wool. I love this yarn, which combines just the right amount of softness, stitch definition, and stability.

Sizing

Bricklayer is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here in a half-hourglass (back waist shaping only) silhouette, on Laura in a women’s average fit.

Bricklayer is also available in straight, a-line, and tapered silhouettes, and fits for men, women, and children.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Bricklayer pattern will be written to your exact gauge, whatever it may be. Any weight yarn will work well with this design, and you should swatch in Stockinette.

(But if you’re curious, I liked my Swans Island fabric around 4.5 stitches and 7 rows to the inch.)

Materials

This sample was worked in the yarn now known as Swans Island Worsted, formerly known as Swans Island Aran. I liked a gauge of 18 stitches and 28 rows to 4’’ (10 cm). At that gauge, you’ll need around 10 (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20) hanks for a shaped, average-length garment in approximate sizes 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm cm.

If you’re *not* using Swans, or you’re getting a different gauge, I strongly recommend the app Stashbot by Hannah Fettig for yardage estimations.

Construction

Bricklayer is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves. It’s also available in the drop shoulder construction.
