Description

Courant is a figure-flattering take on a classic pullover with modern touches. The deep sleeve cuffs and wide turtleneck balance one another out; combined with a shorter sweater length, they give this basic silhouette a clean flair. The original was worked in set-in sleeve construction with an hourglass silhouette and a short sweater length, but this versatile style looks great in other constructions, silhouettes and lengths, as well.

The sample was worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed; edges are trimmed in a combination of broken rib and seed stitch. The wide, shallow turtleneck is added after seaming and worked in the round. Courant will work best in a yarn that is between sport and light worsted in gauge.

Sizing

Courant is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Amy in an “hourglass close fit” with an hourglass silhouette and set-in sleeve construction, but is available with other constructions, silhouettes and fits as well.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Courant pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. I recommend something between a sport or light worsted for this design.

Materials

I used the Knitting Boutique’s Severn DK, a Blue-Faced Leicester and Silk blend, for this design. It’s shown in the color “Amber”.

To make a standard-size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm sweater, you’ll need approximately 4 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8) hanks of Severn DK for this design.

For other yarns, CustomFit will give you a yardage estimate before you finalize a custom pattern, but you can also use Hannah Fettig’s Stashbot app or pamphlet to estimate yarn requirements when purchasing yarn.

Construction

Courant is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves or modified drop-shoulder sleeves.
