Cushing Isle

$12.50

Cushing Isle is a comfortable, relaxed sweater with a touch of elegance. It was created specifically for Clara Parkes’ limited edition Cormo 1.0, an incredibly comfortable and fantastic sweater yarn, but its comfortable, slouchy style will work in a variety of materials. It looks especially lovely in a hand-dyed tonal or shaded solid yarn.

When Clara’s gorgeous yarn arrived at my house, I knew I wanted to make a sweater out of it that begged to be worn. Not one of those sweaters that you finish and admire for its intricacy and detail, but instead one that you wear every day – for its blend of perfect fit, comfort, and style. I used a Cabled Check pattern on the straight fronts of this sweater, to break up the variegation in the yarn a bit and add some interest. Classic, comfortable 2×2 ribbing trims all of the edges.

Cushing Isle is worked in pieces from the bottom up, with set-in or modified drop-shoulder sleeves. It features a deep V-neckline and can be made in either a relaxed back-shaping-only hourglass silhouette or a no-waist-shaping straight silhouette.

Please note that Cushing Isle is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit custom pattern generator. Upon purchase, you’ll receive a credit for a custom version of Cushing Isle and instructions on how to create it.

Sizing

Cushing Isle is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Amy with set in sleeves, in a “hourglass average fit” with a back shaping only hourglass silhouette, but is available with other constructions, silhouettes, and fits as well.

Gauge

Your own customized version of Cushing Isle will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. The original yarn was a worsted weight, but the design looks great in lighter-weight yarns as well.

Please swatch in both Stockinette and the Cabled Check pattern, to ensure a consistent gauge across both stitch patterns. Switch needle sizes for the Check pattern if necessary to maintain gauge.

Materials

I used Clara Parkes’ “Cormo 1.0” from her Clara Yarn line for the original sample, but it has sadly sold out.

To make a standard-size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm sweater, you’ll need approximately 780 (830, 900, 955, 1055, 1110, 1180, 1250, 1330, 1405, 1530, 1670) yds/ 715 (760, 825, 875, 965, 1015, 1080, 1145, 1215, 1285, 1400, 1530) m of a worsted-weight yarn for this design.

For other yarns, CustomFit will give you a yardage estimate before you finalize a custom pattern, but you can also use Hannah Fettig’s Stashbot app or pamphlet to estimate yarn requirements when purchasing yarn.

Construction

Cushing Isle is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in or modified drop-shoulder sleeves.
