Cushman

$12.50

Cushman, a sweater I designed for my very first “make wear love” retreat on the coast of Maine, is a great layering piece for patio dinners on chilly nights and clambering around the shoreline anytime. Its worn-open style can be dressed up or down, and it looks good layered over anything. The textured stitch is interesting, but not fussy or difficult since its a simple knit-purl combination. Simple, narrow garter trim keeps things neat and clean.

I recommend working Cushman in pieces, and then seaming, for stability. The 3/4-length sleeves are warm while staying out of your way, and the seams provide the garment with stability and keep it in place on your body despite the lack of closures. The cardigan's vertical opening slims the torso and offers a peek at a super-sweet top.

Please note that Cushman is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit custom pattern generator. Upon purchase, you'll receive a credit for a custom version of Cushman and instructions on how to create it. Please swatch in the Sugar Cube Stitch Pattern for this design.

Sizing

Cushman is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Naomi in an “hourglass close fit” with an hourglass silhouette, but is available with all of CustomFit’s other silhouettes and fits as well.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Cushman pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. The original gauge of this pattern was for a sport-weight yarn, but it should look lovely in anything from a fingering to a light worsted.

Please swatch in the Sugar Cube Stitch Pattern for this design.

Materials

I used String Theory Blue-Faced Sport, which has now been discontinued, for the sample shown. Any hand-dyed sport weight or DK yarn, made with Blue Faced Leicester wool, will give a similar look.

To make a standard-size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm sweater, you’ll need approximately 584 (640, 693, 733, 794, 858, 903, 969, 1040, 1100, 1180, 1284) yds/533 (584, 632, 669, 725, 783, 824, 884, 949, 1004, 1077, 1172) m of a sport-weight yarn for this design.
