Fallside

Description

I’ve been itching to make a cozy, long, un-shaped sweater with a big fun collar for some time. And when my god-daughter asked me to make her a special garment out of the most perfectly-luscious, perfectly-purple yarn, I knew my big-collar design would be just the thing. Fallside pairs simple ribbing detail with a straight shape and some fun asymmetry to create a cozy classic. It’s worked from the bottom up in pieces with set-in sleeves; the asymmetrical collar and buttons are picked up and added after seaming.

The sample uses a tunic length and long sleeves, but you can change either before creating your pattern by selecting different lengths within CustomFit, as you create your custom pattern. (My own rose-colored version uses an average length and long sleeves.)

Sizing

Fallside is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Morgan in a “children’s average fit” with a straight silhouette, and on Amy in a “woman’s close fit”. Fallside is available in any of CustomFit’s silhouettes and fits.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Fallside pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. I worked the sweater samples up in fingering, and think the design would work best at a light worsted gauge or below.

Materials

Both of the samples shown here were made with Indigodragonfly Chameleon, a blend of extra fine merino, cashmere, and silk that’s a pleasure to knit and to wear.

For Morgan’s purple sample, I used the color “How Did I Ever Live Without A Ghost?”, inspired by the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Character Cordelia. For my own rose-colored sample, I used the color “Fozziebacca, the wokka-wookie”.

I liked this yarn at 7.5 stitches and 10 rows per inch; with this yarn, and a similar gauge, you’ll need approximately 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8) hanks of Chameleon for a standard size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81, 86, 91, 97, 102, 107, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152) cm garment (finished measurements; assumes a tunic length).

Construction

Fallside is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves.
