Morbillo Cardigan

$12.50

The Morbillo Cardigan is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit pattern generator. Upon purchase, you’ll receive a credit for a custom version of Morbillo on your CustomFit patterns page and instructions on how to create it.

The Morbillo cardigan is named for one of our favorite people at the Sebasco Harbor Resort, where I held my make. wear. love. fall sweater retreats until I ended the retreats in 2019. Sebasco is a special place, made more so by the efforts of the people who run it. This cardigan reminds me of the laid back, but still elegant, style of the resort.

It’s intended to be worn open, and worked in a reverse Stockinette pattern with stripes of twisted stitches decorating the back, front, and sleeves. I’ve chosen to wear it in a long length and a-line silhouette with long sleeves, but you can adjust Morbillo to meet your needs.

I used Indigodragonfly’s Wingenhooven DK, one of my desert island yarns, for its crisp stitch definition and subtle color changes. The silk, yak, and merino blend perfectly combines softness and luxury and I recommend it without reservation.

Sizing

Morbillo is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here in an a-line silhouette, on Maya in a women’s average fit.

Morbillo is also available in hourglass, straight, and tapered silhouettes, and fits for men, women, and children.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Morbillo pattern will be written to your exact gauge, whatever it may be. Any weight yarn will work well with this design, and you should swatch in Stockinette.

(But if you’re curious, I liked my Wingenhooven fabric around 5.5 stitches and 8.25 rows to the inch.)

Materials

I used Indigodragonfly’s Wingenhooven DK, one of my desert island yarns, for its crisp stitch definition and subtle color changes. The silk, yak, and merino blend perfectly combines softness and luxury and I recommend it without reservation.

I’ve shown it here in the retreat colorway “You’ve Got Some Red on You”. At 5.5 stitches and 8.25 rows per inch, an approx size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm a-line sweater in a long length will take around 6 (6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11) hanks.

(Straight-sided and/or shorter sweaters will use less yarn!)

If you’re *not* using Wingenhooven, or you’re getting a different gauge, I strongly recommend the app Stashbot by Hannah Fettig for yardage estimations.

Construction

Morbillo is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves.
