The New Towne Cardigan is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit custom pattern generator. Upon purchase, you’ll receive a credit for a custom version of New Towne and instructions on how to create it.
New Towne is an easy to wear open cardigan with an unusual crochet-like stitch pattern called Rosette Stitch trimming its edges – hem, sleeve cuff, and a wee shawl collar. (Find instructions for Rosette Stitch, which should be worked on needles 2 sizes larger than your main needle size, by clicking here.)
I’ve worked New Towne in a super-soft, fuzzy alpaca from Blue Sky Fibers – the yarn’s halo works well with the Rosette Stitch and I’d highly recommend it for the design. New Towne is worked in pieces from the bottom up, with set-in sleeves. The collar is picked up and worked in long rows after seaming, with some short rows to shape the back neck. It is meant to be worn open.
New Towne is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Amy in an “hourglass close fit” with an hourglass silhouette, but is available with a-line and straight silhouettes, and other fits, as well.
Your own customized version of the New Towne pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. This design works well in yarns up to a light worsted weight.
I used Blue Sky Fibers Baby Alpaca, in the color “Relish”, for this design. I love Baby Alpaca for sweaters and have several made from it – it’s lovely to work with, and warm and soft to wear.
