Popham Beach

Popham Beach is one of the retreat designs for our fall 2015 make. wear. love. retreats on the coast of Maine. Maine beaches are… …well, let’s be honest. They’re pretty chilly places. And they require warm, snuggly sweaters, which is exactly what you get with this comfortable pullover.

As shown, Popham Beach features long set-in sleeves, a low-hip length, patch pockets, and a relaxed fit thanks to waist shaping located on the back of the sweater only. You can change any of these and make Popham Beach in whatever construction, silhouette, length, and fit you like. All of the edges are trimmed with Broken Rib, and the patch pockets are knit out of it as well, for texture. A wide scoop neckline takes any kind of layer you’d like to wear gracefully and with flattering lines.

Sizing

Popham Beach is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Milly in an “hourglass relaxed fit” with a back-waist-shaping-only hourglass silhouette, and an “hourglass average” fit on Amy. Both are wearing set-in sleeves.

Popham Beach is available with all of CustomFit’s other constructions, silhouettes and fits, as well.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Popham Beach pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. This design works well from a sport through worsted gauge.

Materials

I used The Fibre Co. Cumbria, in the color “Castlerigg”, for this sample. Cumbria is a lovely wool blend with the tiniest bit of mohair for strength and beautiful shine. I liked this yarn at around 5.25 stitches to the inch.

At that gauge, to make a standard-size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm sweater, you’ll need approximately 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9) hanks of Cumbria for this design.

For other yarns, CustomFit will give you a yardage estimate before you finalize a custom pattern, but you can also use Hannah Fettig’s Stashbot app or pamphlet to estimate yarn requirements when purchasing yarn.

Construction

Popham Beach is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in or modified drop shoulder sleeves. Patch pockets are knit separately and then sewn on during finishing.
