Description

Riverbank Grapes, sometimes also called frost grapes, are native to New Brunswick, Canada. They grow in thick twining tendrils near water sources, and produce a intense purple coloured grape. This sweater takes inspiration with its thick cables growing up the sleeves.

The pattern has a narrow scoop neck, which starts at the armhole shaping. It has rope cables up the sleeves, with the body of the sweater in stockinette to allow for the most flexibility to choose your preferred silhouette.

Riverbank Grape is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here with set-in sleeves and an hourglass silhouette in a women’s average fit.

Riverbank Grape is also available in the drop shoulder construction and in hourglass, straight, and tapered silhouettes, and fits for men, women, and children.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Riverbank Grape pattern will be written to your exact gauge, whatever it may be. The weight of the yarn will affect the width of the sleeve cables, so you should pick a yarn around a worsted weight yarn to preserve the width of the cable.

Materials

The sample is knit in a semi-solid colour of Indigodragonfly’s Orca Worsted (100% Merino Wool) [183 m/200 yds per 100 g/3.5 oz skein]. We recommend Indigodragonfly’s MerGoat Worsted (80% Merino/10% Cashmere/10% Nylon) [174 m/190 yds per 115 g/4 oz skein].

At this gauge, to make an average fit, hourglass sweater as shown here, a standard CYCA size 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64)’’ / 81 (86, 91, 97, 102, 107, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152, 163)  cm will use approximately 6 (7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) hanks of the Indigodragonfly’s MerGoat Worsted, knit at 20 stitches per 4 inches. (A-line and longer sweaters will use more yarn! Straight-sided and shorter sweaters will use less yarn!)

For other yarns, CustomFit will give you a yardage estimate before you finalize a custom pattern, but you can also use Hannah Fettig’s Stashbot app or pamphlet to estimate yarn requirements when purchasing yarn.

Construction

Riverbank Grape is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves or modified drop shoulder sleeves.
