Spanish Bay

$12.50

Spanish Bay was created for the inaugural make. wear. love. west coast retreat, in beautiful Pacific Grove CA, for our vendor Monarch Knitting. Pacific Grove, and California's Central Coast more generally, is a stunning and unpretentious location that's beautiful year-round. Nights can be chilly, and when we lived there I reached for a lightweight cardigan almost daily.

I let those surroundings inspire me for this design, and whipped up a chic, simple open cardigan in a lovely summer tweed. It's trimmed with a simple lace design and can be dressed up or down. I've shown it here in an hourglass silhouette with 3/4 sleeves, but you can change that if you like. However you make yours, Spanish Bay is sure to become a go-to cardigan in your closet.

Please note that Spanish Bay is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit custom pattern generator. Upon purchase, you'll receive a credit for a custom version of Spanish Bay and instructions on how to create it.

Sizing

Spanish Bay is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Beth in an “hourglass average fit” with an hourglass silhouette, but is available with a-line and straight silhouettes and other fits as well.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Spanish Bay pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. This design works well at a variety of gauges, but I suggest using something light worsted or lighter to keep the breezy feel.

Materials

I used Rowan Purelife Revive, now discontinued, for the sample shown. If you can still find it, I think the Revive makes a lovely, sturdy cardigan and the bit of stiffness really helps the lace.

I’d recommend Shibui Twig as a fairly faithful substitute. To make a standard size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm sweater, you’ll need approximately 940 (1040, 1220, 1300, 1360, 1440, 1520, 1600, 1680, 1780, 1840, 1940, 2020) yards of yarn.

Construction

Spanish Bay is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves.
