Point Pinos

Description

Point Pinos is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern via my CustomFit custom pattern generator. Upon purchase, you’ll receive a credit for a custom version of Point Pinos and instructions on how to create it.

I created Point Pinos as part of the 2017 make. wear. love. west sweater retreat collection, out of the exquisite Shibui Yarns carried by our vendor Monarch Knitting. It’s a sophisticated take on the kinds of cardigans I personally love the most – open styles that can be closed with my favorite Jul Closure of the day. With long sleeves, simple rolled and 1×1 ribbed edges, and subtle waist shaping on the back of the garment only, it’s as flattering as it is comfortable.

One note on the materials used to make this design: I used Shibui Twig and Cima held together; the utter lack of memory in these fibers, combined with their weight, make rolled edges practical. If you’re knitting Point Pinos in a springy wool, please consider substituting a small ribbed or garter edge.

Sizing

Point Pinos is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here on Amy in an “hourglass average fit” with an hourglass silhouette, but is available with a-line and straight silhouettes, and other fits, as well.

Gauge

Your own customized version of the Point Pinos pattern will be written to your gauge, whatever it may be. This design works well at a variety of gauges.

Materials

I used Shibui’s Twig and Cima in the color “Tar”, held together, for this sample. This combination of yarns makes for a softer, slightly fuzzier linen-based fabric. One of the joys of CustomFit is that you can use whichever mix of Shibui yarns you like to make the pattern, depending on the blend of fibers, drape, and luster you’d like. If you’re substituting outside the Shibui range, and/or working with non-drapey fibers, please swatch before deciding to use a rolled edge.

I liked the Twig/Cima mix at a gauge of approximately 5.75 stitches and 8 rows to 1” (2.5 cm). Using this mix and gauge, for a standard size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81.5, 86.5, 91.5, 96.5, 101.5, 106.5, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152.5) cm garment you’ll need approximately 4 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8) hanks of Cima and 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13, 14) hanks of Twig.

Construction

Point Pinos is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves. The back neckline is ruched in two places to make for a more comfortable sweater; a quick photo tutorial can be found here.
