Glasswort is a leafless plant, whose textured, scale-like texture have always reminded me of twisted stitches. It grows primarily in salt marshes and tidal areas, having adapted to survive where few other plants can grow. This sweater features long twisted ribbing near the wrists, and twisted ribbing at the hem and collar. The comfortable fit, long sleeves, and wide boat neck make it perfect for cooler weather, while the twisted ribbing adds a hint of interest.

Glasswort sweater is available as a custom-gauge, custom-size pattern for the yarn and measurements of your choice via CustomFit. It’s shown here with set-in sleeves and an hourglass silhouette in a women’s average fit.
Glasswort sweater is also available in the drop shoulder construction and in hourglass, straight, and tapered silhouettes, and fits for men, women, and children.
Gauge
Your own customized version of the Glasswort sweater pattern will be written to your exact gauge, whatever it may be. The weight of the yarn will affect the width of the sleeve cables, so you should pick a yarn around a worsted weight yarn to preserve the width of the cable.
Materials
The sample is knit in a semi-solid colour of Hello Stella Fibres‘ Tweed Merino (85% Merino Wool, 15% Donegal) [366 m/400 yds per 100 g/3.5 oz skein].
At this gauge, to make an average fit, hourglass sweater as shown here, a standard CYCA size 32 (34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64)’’ / 81 (86, 91, 97, 102, 107, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152, 163) cm will use approximately hanks of the Hello Stella Fibres’ Tweed Merino, knit at stitches per inches. (A-line and longer sweaters will use more yarn! Straight-sided and shorter sweaters will use less yarn!)
For other yarns, CustomFit will give you a yardage estimate before you finalize a custom pattern, but you can also use Hannah Fettig’s Stashbot app or pamphlet to estimate yarn requirements when purchasing yarn.
Construction
Glasswort sweater is worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, with set-in sleeves or modified drop shoulder sleeves.
